With a greenhouse you can extend the seasons and grow plants / vegetables that are struggling in our climate. Even during the winter months, a storage place for garden material or winter sensitive plants will certainly come in handy. A number of questions arise when you are about to purchase. Which material do I choose? What dimensions should the greenhouse have? What is the best orientation? Do I need a foundation? Below we try to answer the most frequently asked questions.

If you cannot find answers to your questions, do not hesitate to contact your point of sale: https://janssens-alusystems.be/dealers

DO YOU ALSO HAVE CUSTOMIZED GREENHOUSES?

You will find standard Action models on our website but also tailor-made greenhouses. If your dimensions differ or if you want alternatives, this might be possible in many cases. Please contact 1 of the sales points for this, they will be happy to answer all your questions.

DO YOU NEED AN AUTHORISATION TO BUILD A GREENHOUSE?

For many greenhouses you do not need a permit, for others you must report or apply for a permit.  These regulations are very specific and very between countries and regions.  Due to changing regulations, it is advisable to inform your local government about this.

WHY AN ALUMINUM GREENHOUSE?

Aluminum greenhouses are light and durable. They do not rust and require a minimum of maintenance. Another advantage of an aluminum conservatory are the narrow glazing bars, which allow extra light to enter the greenhouse. Moreover, aluminum is 100% recyclable and therefore an environmentally conscious choice!

WHICH GLAZING DO I CHOOSE? TRADITIONAL GLASS, SAFETY GLASS OR POLYCARBONATE?

GLASS: Traditional horticultural glass (3 to 4 mm thick) is most commonly used in greenhouses because it is cheaper than safety glass. However, it is less strong and when it breaks it shatters into sharp pieces. Toughened safety glass (EN12150ESG) is five to seven times stronger than horticultural glass and should it break in an extreme case, it will disintegrate into small, harmless pieces. All our greenhouses are fitted with 4mm thoughened glass as standard.

POLYCARBONATE: If you want to prevent glass breakage completely and also want to pay attention to insulation, you can opt for plastic. These consist of clear double sheets of polycarbonate and they insulate 40% better than single glass. If you want to heat the conservatory in winter, polycarbonate is definitely recommended. As a downside, it can be cited that polycarbonate is not transparent, has a cheaper appearance and in the long term less durable than glass. Our greenhouses are fitted with 4mm toughened glass as standard, polycarbonate is an option.

IF I OPT FOR POLYCARBONATE HOLLOW CORE SHEETS INSTEAD OF GLASS: WHAT ABOUT CONDENSATION DROPLETS AND MOSS FORMATION?

When it comes to quality and durability, our 4mm safety glass is always the better choice. For insulation reasons or simply because of the lower transparency, it is possible to opt for polycarbonate hollow core sheets of 10 mm.

Condensation is a natural phenomenon in hollow core slabs due to the relative humidity. Water vapor will form droplets when it comes into contact with cool surfaces. These droplets form the liquid in channels or cells of polycarbonate sheets.

To make these water droplets disappear, our polycarbonate roofing sheets are fitted with AntiDust tape (closed at the top, perforated at the bottom). This allows the condensation/water to flow away and it only gives a limited air circulation in the roof panel.

HOW BIG SHOULD A GREENHOUSE BE?

The size of a greenhouse determines the amount of plants you can grow in it. And it is filled faster than you might expect. You might start with a few tomato plants and cucumbers, but soon other plants will follow and before you realise, your greenhouse will be full.  Keep in mind that your hobby may expand over time and choose a greenhouse a bit bigger if possible. In a bigger greenhouse, the temperature will remain more constant compared to a small greenhouse. This is clearly noticeable in the results. An additional advantage may be that you can work more easily in a bigger conservatory. After all, you have more room to maneuver and you can change crops more easily.

CAN I ADD EXTRA DOORS OR WINDOWS?

Our greenhouses offer the option of installing the door in both width and length (except on Junior-models!). An extra sliding door should usually be possible. We offer promo-houses (standard packages with great price / quality ratio), these are set-packages and it is NOT possible to add extra roof- or side windows.  On all other houses you can configure to your taste!

DO I NEED CONCRETE FOUNDATION WORK?

It is important that a greenhouse is well anchored to the foundation so wind cannot get a hold of it.

All our greenhouses are already fitted with an aluminum foundation beam as standard. This makes a concrete base superfluous for the simplest models. This beam has a ground anchor on each corner. These points must be anchored in concrete AFTER installation so the greenhouse cannot move. In this case, extensive preparatory work is superfluous. You just need to make sure the ground is flat, free of obstructions and level. However, if your garden has a major fall or an unstable ground situation, it is recommended to provide a concrete frost-free base to guarantee the stability of the greenhouse. Details can be found in the regulations and manual. All dimensions on this site and in the manual are always OUTSIDE DIMENSIONS of the aluminum foundation beam.

HOW ABOUT MAINTENANCE OF MY GREENHOUSE?

It is recommended to clean the greenhouse at least twice a year. Make sure you do not use aggressive cleaning products. Some moving parts such as wheels or hinges can use a little bit of penetrating oil. During a storm, one should always close doors and roofwindows to avoid tearing them apart. The cylinder of the automatic window opener should be removed during winter, the freezing cold can cause the cylinder to freeze. During winter the roof has to be cleared of snow or supported in a suitable way. The greenhouse should be built in a location
protected from strong storms and winds.

CAN I USE A GREENHOUSE AS GARDEN PAVILLON OR CONSERVATORY?

As you may have noticed in our photos, our garden greenhouses are often used as a place to sit down, read the newspaper or relax with a glass. In a greenhouse you can place a floor and you can place (outdoor) furniture, but keep in mind that high temperature fluctuations can occur in a greenhouse, discolouration due to the abundance of sunlight, high humidity in intermediate seasons, draft, condensation and, last but not least, the possibility to serious water infiltration on the ground and in the roof (which is acceptable for a cultivation greenhouse).

WHAT ABOUT WARRANTY?

You benefit from the following warranty periods:

  • 10 years on quality and alloy of aluminum;
